Vitamin-B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for various bodily processes. In the nervous system, its primary role is in the production of neurotransmitters that help with memory and learning. Vitamin-B12 is important for brain health to help slow cognitive decline that comes with aging. It is also important in energy production and the production of genetic materials DNA and RNA.
Methylcobalamin is the biologically active form of vitamin-B12. Methylcobalamin is superior to the more common form of vitamin-B12, cyanocobalamin, as it is active immediately in the body after absorption instead of having to be converted in the body to the active form. Vitamin-B12 is found primarily in animal-source foods and is therefore especially important for those who are on a strict vegetarian diet.
Brain atrophy involves the loss of neurons. Many factors have been implicated in affecting the rate of brain atrophy, one of which is high levels of an amino acid in the blood called homocysteine. Studies have shown that raised levels of homocysteine increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Vitamin-B12 (methylcobalamin) supplementation helps control and reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood.
- Helps reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction
- Supports proper muscle function and nerve transmission
- Supports healthy immune system function
- Plays a role in reducing the risk of some cancers
- Aids in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth
Vitamin-D3 (the “sunshine vitamin”) is a form of vitamin D made naturally in the skin from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Vitamin-D3 is an important factor in reducing the risk of cognitive dysfunction. This vitamin also helps maintain healthy nerves and muscles and regulates the immune system. It is also a nutrient that helps in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth and is a key factor in the maintenance of good health.
A wide variety of brain tissue contains vitamin-D receptors, and when they’re activated by vitamin-D3, it facilitates nerve growth in your brain. Researchers also believe that optimal vitamin-D3 levels increase levels of important brain chemicals and protect brain cells by boosting the effectiveness of glial cells in nursing damaged neurons back to health.
Researchers estimate that half of the general population is at risk of vitamin-D deficiency or insufficiency. Among seniors, that estimate reaches as high as 95 percent. While certainly not the sole cause of dementia, evidence suggests vitamin-D deficiency is associated with a substantially increased risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer's disease; therefore vitamin-D supplementation may be a very important factor for successful prevention.
- Required for proper nerve and muscle function
- Supports the nervous system during times of stress
- Helps B vitamins work properly
- Reduces the symptoms of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
- Reduces the effects of toxic metals by chelating heavy metals
Magnesium is a mineral that is involved in over 300 biochemical processes in the body. Magnesium is required for optimal nerve and muscle function as well as many activities of the brain. It is necessary for growth and development, immune system function and temperature regulation. Shaky hands, nervousness, muscle spasms, irregular or rapid heartbeat, all respond favourably to magnesium. In addition, it is required for the B vitamins to work properly and is absolutely necessary for the utilization of thiamine. Unfortunately, most people do not have sufficient levels of this mineral for optimal health. Studies suggest that 50-90% of people are deficient in magnesium.
Magnesium malate is a 100% pure combination of magnesium and malic acid. Malic acid is ionized in the body to form malate, which is a key intermediate in the energy production cycle that makes adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fuel that allows cells to function. Low levels of ATP are commonly found in people suffering with fibromyalgia and are believed to play a significant role in the physical and mental symptoms of the condition. A lack of ATP is also thought to be responsible for the muscle weakness and pain that accompanies the disease. Studies have found that magnesium malate reduces the symptoms of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue such as muscle pain and brain fog.
Magnesium malate has the ability to chelate metals, and most importantly, toxic metals such as aluminum, lead and mercury. Aluminum, for example, is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. However, high concentrations of aluminum in the body can cause damage to the central nervous system, loss of memory and dementia. Excessive exposure to lead and mercury can also create severe impairment of neurological functions. Magnesium malate can bind to these metals and render them ineffective.
- Improves mental sharpness
- Provides antioxidant protection against free radical damage
- Restores energy and vitality
- Supports vital organ function
- Enhances mitochondrial activity
Coenzyme-Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like essential nutrient that improves mental sharpness, provides antioxidants to protect against the effects of free radicals and helps increase levels of cellular energy production required by every cell in our body.
CoQ10 facilitates energy delivery to metabolic processes in the body. Due to its role in ATP synthesis, CoQ10 affects the function of all cells in the body, making it essential for the health of all tissues and organs. Depletion of CoQ10 can develop in the aging process and is associated with many compromising health conditions. As CoQ10 has an affinity for those organs with higher energy requirements such as the brain, kidneys, liver and heart, supplementation helps restore energy and vitality to these tissues and helps in the maintenance of good health.
Mitochondrial dysfunction from chronic oxidation and the resulting chronic inflammation are a root cause of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Accumulated oxidant stress is a major contributor in the risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease and leads to production and deposition of an abnormal protein called amyloid β-peptide, which is itself a trigger for more oxidation and inflammation. Eventually, brain cells overwhelmed by amyloid β-peptide lose their function and die, producing the loss of memory, cognition and physical function we associate with the disease. Human patients with Alzheimer's disease are known to have lower levels of reduced CoQ10 in their spinal fluid, an indication of the intense oxidant stress in their brains. Therefore, supplementation with CoQ10 may be an important factor in reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone)
- Enhances cognitive performance
- Protects neurons from injury and degeneration
- Enhances the production of nerve growth factor
- Helps protect against oxidative damage and inflammation
- Stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis for energy production
PQQ protects cells from oxidative damage that can lead to cognitive decline, neurodegenerative disease, and cardiovascular problems. By protecting neurons and stimulating nerve growth in the brain, PQQ also enhances cognitive performance, including memory and attention.
PQQ, considered a novel cofactor with antioxidant and B vitamin-like activity, enhances the biosynthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF), a key protein involved in the growth and survival of neurons. In addition, PQQ has been shown to significantly decrease levels of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein and IL-6 in the body.
PQQ and CoQ10 are synergistic nutrients that modulate cellular signaling pathways, scavenge oxidative free radicals and support optimal mitochondrial function, providing multifunctional support for neuroprotection and cardiovascular health. Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a role in a variety of conditions and is thought to be an important factor in age-related decline of cell function. Human studies have shown that when taken together, PQQ and CoQ10 provide clinical benefits for cognitive performance, such as improving attention and information processing and providing superior mitochondrial support.
- Promotes phospholipid balance in the brain
- Supports healthy brain and nerve function
- Supports memory and concentration
- Provides a source of choline for enhanced acetylcholine production
- Enhances neurotransmitter production
Citicoline (cytidine diphosphocholine or CDP-choline) boosts the brain's balanced production of its own array of essential phospholipids. Phospholipids are fundamental in the synthesis of neurotransmitters and the proper functioning of neural cell membranes - both highly significant factors for healthy cognitive function. Citicoline also increases mitochondrial energy production in the frontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for language, thinking, decision making, and planning.
Citicoline has been shown to support memory in patients with age-associated memory impairment as well as brain cell recovery from injuries such as stroke or concussion. Furthermore, citicoline increases the production of key neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin, all of which are essential for mood balance and memory. Overall, citicoline is ideal for those looking to support cognitive performance, memory, mood and to support the health and function of brain cells during aging or after a brain injury (ie. concussion or stroke).
KSM-66® Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
- Traditionally used in Ayurveda for memory enhancement
- Helps promote a healthy response to everyday stress and fatigue
- Helps support normal levels of mental clarity, concentration and alertness
- Reduces inflammation and levels of beta-amyloid in the body
- Supports the function of the immune system and liver
Ashwagandha is one of the most revered and widely used plants in traditional Ayurveda, the medicine of ancient India. In North America, ashwagandha is primarily known and used as an adaptogen to support the body during stress and chronic fatigue.
Through antioxidant and inflammation-modulating mechanisms, it appears that ashwagandha can act preventatively for neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's disease. All neurodegenerative diseases are accelerated by stress and as stress increases in the overall population, we are seeing increased numbers of people and people at earlier ages showing signs of dementia and early-onset Alzheimer's disease. The adaptogenic action and stress management support from ashwagandha can slow down the development of these diseases of the brain and nervous system. Therefore, ashwagandha may protect brain cells from oxidative stress and improve concentration and memory.
In addition, this herb has the ability to stimulate neurite outgrowth. Treatment with ashwagandha has been shown to cause neurite outgrowth in human neuroblastoma cells, or in other words, it has the ability to help neurons regenerate. Finally, this impressive adaptogen also supports energy and vitality as well as the immune system and liver function.
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)
- Supports cognitive health and brain function
- Helps improve memory and other mental functions
- Protects the nervous system and boosts antioxidant defenses in the brain
- Decreases anxiety and reduces mental fatigue
- Promotes tranquility
Brahmi, a plant commonly used in traditional medicine, has an age-old reputation for being an effective and powerful herb helpful for memory and combating stress. Brahmi, acts as an adaptogen and helps the body adapt to new or stressful situations.
Brahmi is a herb used in ayurvedic medicine to support cognitive function and memory. Brahmi has been used for improving higher mental functions such as those needed for math and memory skills, for decreasing anxiety and for reducing mental fatigue at work. It improves the processing of visual information to help increase the rate of learning, lower the rate of forgetfulness, and improve the ability to consolidate new information. Furthermore, animal studies have shown that Brahmi prevents drug induced memory loss and increases protein synthesis in the brain as well as the production of key neural antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, this herb has powerful protective effects on brain cells to prevent oxidative damage. Some research has also shown that Brahmi can positively influence brain cells to prompt the regeneration of brain tissue.
There’s little question that Brahmi is one of the best all-around tonic herbs available and is much desired due to its specific beneficial effects on brain health. Herbs such as Brahmi take time to work. Studies have shown that improvements in memory and cognitive function are much better at 8-12 weeks than they are at 4-6 weeks.
Lion’s Mane Mushroom (Hericium erinaceus)
- Activates synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF)
- Supports memory and brain function
- Improves cognitive function
- Contains immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties
- Repairs myelin sheaths for proper nervous system function
Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) is a small protein that is crucial to the growth, maintenance and survival of certain types of neurons. Without NGF, these neurons would undergo apoptosis (cell death). Not only does NGF keep neurons alive, but it is also shown to stimulate the production of new neurons in your central nervous system as well as in the peripheral nervous system.
It is important that production of NGF within your brain remains adequate. If NGF production decreases, no new NGF can make its way to the brain. The result is that some of the brain’s neurons slowly begin deteriorating and production of new neurons slows down considerably or stops altogether. This may be the underlying reason for dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and possibly many other brain and nervous system related diseases. NGF is believed to have the potential to combat these diseases. It reduces neuro-degeneration, and has also been shown to foster nerve regeneration.
Lion's mane mushroom is used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine and has shown to be exceptionally active in stimulating the synthesis of NGF. The mushroom contains substances that stimulate NGF synthesis and pass easily through the blood-brain barrier. NGF synthesis boosts the production of new neurons. Some studies have even shown that lion’s mane mushroom may actually increase cognitive abilities. Additional benefits of Lion’s mane include its antioxidant properties as well as its ability to stimulate myelination (the production of the myelin sheath). This is the protective layer that forms around the axon of a neuron and is essential for the nervous system to function correctly.
